Tahiti ti’a mai, from Tiurai to Heiva exhibition
Tahiti and Her Islands Museum – Te Fare Manaha
From May 29 to October 31, 2021, the Museum of Tahiti and her Islands – Te Fare Manaha presents an exhibition in tribute to the 140th anniversary of the Heiva i Tahiti. From the tiurai to the heiva, it will evoke the festivities through dance, song and music, sports and crafts. Through its collections of costumes, its ethnographic collection, but also its photo and fine art collection, the Museum of Tahiti and her Islands wishes to highlight those who, for 140 years, have been celebrating Polynesian cultural richness during the tiurai.
This exhibition, which revives the different evolutions of the event, is also an opportunity to exhibit the variety of the Establishment’s collections: Heiva i Tahiti costumes from the 1950s to the present day, posters from the 1960s, photographic reproductions from 1880 to 1960, part of the hat collection, one of the last wooden racing va’a from 1980 will be on display, as well as a selection of paintings by renowned artists such as Adriaan Herman Gouwe, Alfred Le Moine, Bobby Holcomb, François Ravello and André Marere. In total, around one hundred documents and objects will be on display.
